Annual Physical Q & A
Why do I need an annual physical?
Dr. Tetro conducts a thorough physical exam to ensure your body is functioning optimally. It's essential that you provide Dr. Tetro with a complete medical history, including your family’s health history. If your family has chronic health conditions, like diabetes and hypertension, you may be at an increased risk for the same issues. Dr. Tetro uses this information to tailor your check-up to your specific needs. She also bases the physical on other factors including your age and the results of in-office health screenings.
What happens during an annual physical exam?
Typically, a physical exam involves an evaluation of your vital signs, including blood pressure checks, heart rate monitoring, and a breathing assessment.
Dr. Tetro conducts an assessment of your head, chest, and abdomen. She may evaluate your nervous system health by asking you to walk around the office and through testing your reflexes. Dr. Tetro also takes a closer look at your eyes, ears, throat, and nose and visually inspects your skin, fingernails, and hair
Additionally, Dr. Tetro discusses your diet to confirm you are receiving sufficient nutrition from the foods you eat, as well as your level of physical activity. She provides guidance on nutrition and exercise to ensure you maintain a healthy weight and a strong muscular system.
Will I need blood work?
After your physical exam, Dr. Tetro may require blood testing if you have existing medical issues, or a family history of conditions like high cholesterol, diabetes, or organ disease. Blood tests help Dr. Tetro identify potential issues, like thyroid disorders and heart disease, that can cause additional medical complications.
If blood work or the physical exam indicates potential medical issues, Dr. Tetro creates a customized care plan to diagnose and treat the condition correctly.
As part of the annual physical, Dr. Tetro will order several laboratory tests in order to comprehensively assess any irregularities in your body that may indicate a possible problem. These can include a complete blood count and a complete metabolic panel (also called a chemistry panel). The panel tests your blood and can indicate any issues that exist in your kidneys, liver, blood chemistry, and immune system. Blood draws and lab processing are done in the office using BioReference. If this lab isn’t in-network for patients, Dr. Tetro can provide a referral to Quest Diagnostics or LabCorp. Patients should check with their insurance carrier and notify the team at the time of their visit if they are in-network with BioReference.
You’ll receive a call from Dr. Tetro about your results and she’ll schedule an in-office follow-up to discuss any abnormalities that may come up in your results.
If you’re due for your annual physical exam, book an appointment with Dr. Tetro online or call her office today.
